&  Traveling Matters Journey to Ireland

September 20-27, 2009

F.A.Q.

What's new in Ireland?
Over that last eight years, Ireland has lead its neighboring European countries as one of the most progressively developed countries in the continent of western Europe. Ireland has a strong economic base in tourism, research & development in technology and medicine. Ireland is not the economically depressed country it used to be - it is one of the most expensive places to live and visit! Ireland currency is the Euro which is much stronger than the American dollar. Approximately, $100 equals about 64 euros. You will find fabulous restaurants with world-class chefs and wonderful shopping, music and great food and wine, even in the local pubs. Ireland also became the first country to ban smoking in public places - that means the pubs! Our journey will contrast the old and the new Ireland.

Do I need a passport?
Yes, a passport is required and must be valid for three months beyond your intended stay. If you need to acquire or renew a passport, please give ample time, at least two months before your departure. For complete information, please visit the State Department Passport FAQ web site.

Should I make my arrangements to fly into Shannon Airport or Dublin Airport?
Shannon Airport is closer to our destination in Ireland. Our itinerary package includes transportation  to and from Shannon airport if you book your flights within the general suggested arrival/departure times for the group. If you wish to come to Ireland sooner, or depart later, you may fly into either airport, but you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation to and from the airport.

Do I need to rent a car?
No. Traveling Matters will be providing coach transportation for the entire journey. If you decide to travel on your own in Ireland before or after the trip, then you may wish to rent a car, which is best picked up at an airport.  Note that rentals are quite expensive and you will be driving on the opposite side of the road as you are accustomed to! Public transportation by buses and trains in Ireland, depending on your itinerary, is possible.

Which airlines fly to Ireland?
Continental, US Airways, American, Aer Lingus, and Delta fly to Ireland from the United States.

How long is the flight?
It varies depending on which part of the USA you are flying from. From the east coast flights are generally 7 hours.  You will need to take an evening red-eye flight in order to arrive the following morning for the group transfer by coach.

When should I book my flight?
As you are probably aware, fares fluctuate a lot, so you can start looking at any time! Do make sure that you learn what your airline’s cancellation/change policy is in case you decide to change plans. And please be aware that many airlines readjust their schedules at the last minute, and your travel times/dates/airports may be changed slightly by the airline – so flexibility is necessary.

Should I purchase travel insurance?
We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance for the Land Package, which may cover you in the event that you have to cancel your trip because of illness of either yourself or someone in your immediate family. Usually, you will need to purchase travel insurance within 21 days of your trip deposit  if you need a waiver of pre-existing medical conditions. Please contact us if you have questions about this.

Can Traveling Matters book my flights for me?
Traveling Matters is a tour operator and not a travel agency that books flights. We do contract with agencies that can book flights for you and we would be happy to recommend those to you. If you are internet savvy, you can check to see if flights are available. Some of our favorite booking sites are; www.sidestep.com, www.travelocity .com, www.kayak.com. You may find that booking directly with your airline will give you more flexibility in the event you have to change plans.

Can I come late or leave early?
We request that you come for the entire package dates. We are not able to make refund adjustments for arriving a few days late or leaving a few days early. Conversely, if you wish to tour Ireland before or after our organized tour, you are welcome to do that! Just be reminded, if you come to Ireland early, you would need to meet up with us on your own at the hotel, unless you make arrangements to meet us at Shannon Airport on the scheduled day others arrive.

Can I book my own hotel room at the conference location?
Sorry, but no, all the bookings must be done through Traveling Matters as we have contracted special rates with the hotels.

Will we always be with the group?
We have built in lots of free time for you to explore on your own, and dine at the fabulous pubs and restaurants of Ireland. You are not required to participate in all of the group excursions/activities. However, past travelers have always enthusiastically wanted to participate!

What will the weather be like?
Generally, weather in Ireland during the autumn months is mild. Days are usually sunny, in the 60s. It is best to dress in light layers, and be sure to bring a raincoat or parka and water-resistant footwear in the event of rain.

How much baggage can I bring?
Each airline has different baggage regulations and they have added new baggage costs. Please check with your individual airline. We would like to emphasize that our coach carrier requests that you bring just ONE suitcase and ONE carry-on. You will find it much easier to travel lightly!
